KIA – Learn Your Charge
For the 2024 Auto Show I collaborated with WXM and KIA to design two custom electronic installations:
- 360-Degree Under-Car Sensor System – Twelve low-profile sensors were arranged around each vehicle to detect visitors approaching from any direction. When someone came within range, addressable LEDs beneath the car illuminated in response, creating a striking interactive halo.
- Multi-Screen Interactive Control Unit – I engineered a compact, purpose-built controller capable of playing five perfectly synchronized video feeds on five different displays while simultaneously driving multiple LED light strips. The lighting was precisely timed to the animations on screen for a unified visual experience.
Visitors engaged with both systems by selecting different EV charger ports. Because tens of thousands of people would interact with the exhibit, durability was critical. I used sealed laser sensors instead of mechanical switches to prevent wear and ensure reliability throughout the show.
All hardware was designed from scratch to fit into a tight wall cavity, where space and heat dissipation ruled out off-the-shelf computers. The exhibit was presented in both English (Toronto) and French (Montréal).
